We are seeing more and more of these 7-figure settlements as the 'powers-that-be' realize that they cannot defend many of the taser-related deaths that are taking place each week in America.

I see that the New Mexico chief of police refuses to take responsibility for the errors made by his officers when they killed Javier Aguilar.

It could be that the officers weren't in error at all.
Municipalities frequently settle lawsuits because fighting them (even fighting and winning) is often more costly than the payout.
Gunfighter - Your point is well-taken. Especially if the folks filing the lawsuit have deep pockets. In this case, the folks fighting the lawsuit didn't have deep pockets. Methinks that they had a powerful case that made it worthwhile for the city to settle.
In either case, it is a shame that the police chief refuses to see that his officers couldn't have done something different that would have resulted in a better outcome.
